About Diadora
Diadora was founded in 1948 in Caerano di San Marco, Italy, by Marcello Danieli, a cobbler who established the company with the goal of creating footwear that would meet the needs of athletes. Diadora has been serving athletes since 1948 and has grown from a small family workshop into a globally recognized Italian sportswear brand. Diadora is the only Italian athletic footwear and apparel manufacturer to still make products in Italy, maintaining its commitment to Italian craftsmanship and heritage.
In the beginning, the company was simply a workshop providing handmade boots for local workers and hikers in the region. In the early 1960s, Diadora began their transition into the sportswear industry and producing footwear appropriate for sports such as squash and tennis. The historic in-house production line reopened in June 2015 after a painstaking process to restore the original machinery, marking the beginning of Diadora's journey towards a more sustainable way of doing business.
What Sports and Activities Does Diadora Specialize In?
Diadora serves as the authentic Premium Italian Sport destination for Running, Tennis and Calcio (football). The brand has established itself across multiple athletic disciplines over the decades. In the 1980s, the company reinforced its presence in "historic" sports and expanded into other sports, such as cycling with Francesco Moser, basketball with the Milano Basket team, volleyball with Andrea Zorzi and the Italian National Team, racing with Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost and Niki Lauda, and boxing with Francesco Damiani.
Tennis became a key sport for the company, with Diadora bringing the first shoes with a leather upper instead of a fabric upper to the market. The mid-seventies marked Diadora's entry into the soccer category, aided by Roberto Bettega, and Diadora America is the #3 brand in market share in soccer.
What Products Does Diadora Offer?
Athletic Footwear
Diadora produces football boots and athletic shoes, covering a comprehensive range of sports applications. The company's first products were ski boots, and they quickly expanded their offerings to include soccer cleats, running shoes, and other athletic footwear. The 1980s saw the introduction of the iconic Diadora "N9000" running shoe, which became one of the brand's most recognizable and popular products.
The B.Elite style, created in white leather with a golden fregio to celebrate Bjorn Borg's five wins at Wimbledon, is an iconic Diadora style and universally recognized as one of their most popular styles.
Apparel and Clothing
Diadora offers a range of apparel that includes t-shirts, polo shirts, hoodies, jackets, leggings, shorts, and compression garments. Diadora began to branch out into new product categories, including clothing and accessories, further expanding its reach and influence in the sportswear industry.
What Makes Diadora's Products Special?
Diadora was one of the first companies to conceive that famous athletes would be the best way to sell not only sports products, but also a performance dream, and the Veneto brand began to cultivate important relationships with some of the greatest sportsmen of the time. Diadora decided to utilize athlete endorsements to accelerate their presence in the sportswear industry by endorsing stars such as Bjorn Borg in tennis, Giuseppe Gentile in athletics, and Roberto Bettega in football, with Diadora signing a contract with Bjorn Borg in 1976.
Based originally on renowned Italian artisan techniques, Diadora's shoes became more and more technologically advanced, thanks to cooperation from champions such as Vilas, Mulligan, and the legendary Bjorn Borg. The Diadora Research Centre was born: an innovative team comprising footwear technicians, experts from Milan Polytechnic's Bioengineering Centre and orthopaedists, translating the needs of athletes and consumers into technical objectives and quality targets.
How Does Diadora Approach Sustainability?
In 2021 Diadora achieved the EcoVadis platinum medal, positioning itself among the top 1% sustainability performers among 75,000 companies evaluated by EcoVadis in more than 160 countries and 200 industries. This achievement represents the greatest among EcoVadis recognitions. EcoVadis is the world's most trusted provider of business sustainability ratings, intelligence, and collaborative performance improvement tools for global supply chains.
The reopening of their historic production line was not only a step towards hand-crafted excellence but also a step in a more sustainable way of production by revitalizing old machinery. The company made significant investments in new technologies and materials that reduced its impact on the environment, becoming a leader in sustainable sportswear production.
